Visa types and application procedures
The type of visa you need to travel to Hong Kong depends on the reason for your stay. Tourist and student visas are usually pretty easy to get, but this does not apply for work visas.
To apply for a visa, your passport must be valid for at least six months after the scheduled date of entry. The most common visas are the following:
Visitor visa for Hong Kong
Citizens of certain countries can visit Hong Kong without a visa for seven to 180 days. These include the UK, Australia, France, Germany, Italy, Singapore, Spain and the United States.
If you need a visa, you should request it at the Chinese embassy, Chinese consulate in your home country or of course ask us about it. Depending on the Consulate processing time can be up to four weeks. In any case, you should allow sufficient time for the application. Note that you cannot change a visa into a work visa once you have entered Hong Kong with a visitor's visa. In this case, you would have to go out and re-enter (regardless of your nationality).
Work visa for Hong Kong
For a work visa you need a job with a company that is willing to hire you and take over the application process for your visa. The company must be able to demonstrate that you possess the necessary skills for the job and the position cannot be occupied by resident applicants. In the granting of work visas from the Immigration Department (Immigration Department) the training and work experience of the applicant and other factors are taken into consideration.
The application for your work visa is handled not by you but by your future employer. The company must submit a confirmed job offer, as well as proof that the pay package contains salary, housing, education and medical care and other benefits for qualified personnel in Hong Kong.
After a processing time of four to six weeks, the visa will be issued to your employer, who should then pass it on to you. Once you have received your visa, you can apply for a residence permit for your spouse and your children.
Work visas are normally issued for the duration of employment. However, they are usually valid no longer than two years. If your company would like to hire you for longer, they must apply for a renewal before the expiry of your visa, which is usually fairly straightforward.
A work visa for Hong Kong is not transferable from one company to another. If you cancel or are dismissed, you must apply for a new visa. If you leave the company in which you have worked, they must inform the immigration authority. A transfer within the company is possible, if the employee has worked for more than 12 months in a company office overseas.
If you want to accept additional work outside the scope of your approved visa, you should apply for a permit for such additional employment. For this you need to submit your travel visa to the immigration authority (Immigration Department),, together with your identity card, Passport, a description of the work for which you are under contract, as well as a letter from your current work visa sponsor, giving you the permission to do the extra work.
